1970 or thereabouts? Are you sure?

practice to sell small appliances without a plug -- that was sold (and
charged for) separately.


Yep. It was the late 1980s/early 1990s that plugs on cords became the norm.
I recall, a TV I bought in 1987 that never had a plug.
