When the electric motor is turning and the petrol motor is off the
electric motor is off the batteries. AS the genny will put no load on
the power splitter the engine will be decoupled. Bring in load from the
genny (power from the petrol motor to the electric motor) an the power
splitter locks into the motor and spins it. See the graphic that Paul

So the petrol engine starts the genny with a bang? as it would if it is a
fixed gear...
