just got a replacement mains filter for a dishwasher and am a little
confused as to the wiring. it is not a direct replacement for the one
already fitted. it has four tags two labelled L and N which are self
explanatory but the other two are both labelled U. Does the U mean
unfiltered input?

Hi!
If this is a european unit L and N are the mains input U and U the output
into the machine.
Thus the U opposite the L gets the brown wire and the U opposite the N gets
the blue wire
(if the machines internal wires are so coded).
Important: The filter case usually gets bolted onto the frame of the machine
(safety earth).
Note: If you aren't comfortable with domestic appliances, I suggest you
employ a qualified
electrician, as the voltages found inside appliances are quite dangerous -
their fees are based
on having discovered this fact painfully ;-)
Good luck,
Pierre.
