Hello:

Have started talking to HVAC contractors regarding replacing a very
old gas, forced hot air furnace with a new Trane or American Standard

one.
Probably about 100 K BTU/H size.

Wanted to get a two stage, with a variable speed blower unit.

Shocked at what the price differential "seems" to be for a unit with

the
variable speed
blower, and for the same unit without the variable speed blower.

Does a differential in cost of about $ 1,500 sound right ?
If not, what would be "right" ?

Thanks,
B.

$1500 will barely get the motor and controller replaced out of warranty

The Trane VS motor Module is about $100.00 to $200.00 (LIST) for
repairs, depending on size (blower capacity). Usually only the module
needs replaced, not the entire motor. Replacing the module only takes
about 15 minutes instead of an hour, so the total cost is not that high
compared to a standard motor.

Steve must be using the gold plated motors. :-)

The cost of a VS air handler over a standard air handler is usually
$500 to $1000.00 List. sounds like your contractor doesn't like VS, or
doesn't know much about it.

If you live in a high humidity climate, VS is better, when set to
enhanced mode. VS also overcomes slightly undersized duct systems and
high efficiency filters better than standard blowers.

Trane has 10 year parts warranty standard on their better units, so
repair cost should not be as much of a problem as some state.
