If its been kept in shed perhaps moisture has got into the electronics
and damaged them.

It's probably a water level sensor in the new one clogged up. Some of them
use plastic tubes which are prone to blocking.

You could also try fixing the element in the old one. It isn't usually a
massively difficult job and the element will cost about 20 quid.
