You don't even have to change gears to do tri and quad figures, just
offset
centers and you have it.

Sorta. On my machine the workpiece is constantly offsetting, making a
smooth transition from the curved side to a curved corner. Just as there is
a difference between offset turning and oval/elliptical turning. Offset
turning leaves you with and edge where the two arcs intersect.
