If you are trying to pull a vacuum on a "very leaky system," then, as you
say, you will be unable to pull a proper vacuum, so misting is not your main
problem. Get rid of the leaks. Any oil mist your pump produces goes out
into the atmosphere, not into the vacuum chuck--so hang a filter jar on your
outlet. It will collect the oil, and quiet the pump considrably. If you
see oil collecting in the jar, you will want to consider whether it is time
to add oil to the pump.
