the centre of a beam is by far the best way to go albeit more time consuming
than hacking a slice out of the top.

It also has the further advantage that the cables are likely to be out
of range of screws or nails inserted from below into the ceiling, or
from above into the floor, by some unsuspecting person at some point
in the future.
