I always thought one could make a nice magnetic scanner to pre-screen
all items entering into an mri suite.

Every MRI scanner that GE ships comes with a kit that includes
small magnets that the scan techs are supposed to use for that.
If the incident you mention is the one I think it was (1994-ish?),
then that was a GE scanner. The hospital got in quite a bit
of trouble for the incident, due to procedures not being followed.
