We have a 2-year old emerson TV that I use for

that if I leave it on for about 40 mins or so, it
gives off a smell, like burning something, but it's
not a very strong smell.

Move the TV to another room, turn it on for an hour, then come back with
your sniffer. That should answer your question.

Seriously, if you have problems with outlets, get an electrician in there
soon to check it out.
