frightened me away. So I'm asking the good, faithful uk.diy crowd
what is the absolute cheapest phone/package I can buy/rent which (a)
allows me to receive incoming calls from landline phones or mobile
phones and (b) can make call to BT landline phones?

I'm in much the same position as MM, but I've already got my phone, for
emergencies only - breakdowns or a stacked bike - and I won't say what I
paid for it..... AAaaaaaargh.

But I use it occasionally to call my answering machine, to make sure it
still works, because I heard if you don't use it, the provider may de-
activate it, without necessarily consulting you.

Could this be true, and if so, how long would it have to be inactive for?

It's on O2 Prepay

Call the provider and ask. 6 months is a typical time for
deactivation and number reallocation
