First you need a chimney sweep to come over, check it out, and make
sure it is OK to use. Are you sure it is rated for wood? Are you
certain there are no blockages or hazardous buildups if you have never
used it?
Afterwads, you need a metal bucket with raised bottom & a tight lid,
sold for this purpose in a set with a metal scoop, so that you have
someplace to put the bulk of the ashes. And during the fire - you
have a screen for the front so that sparks do not jump out & set your
floor on fire?
DO NOT try to vacuum up the remaining ashes for a couple of DAYS so
that a newb like you can be absolutely sure all the embers are out.
(It is a classic tenderfoot trick to burn down their house by sucking
live embers into their vacuum cleaner, which then later catches fire
in the closet when nobody is looking.)
