Only if the units he has are able to do a "cold start". Some older UPS
units don't have this option. I don't recall if his models will.

The key question is whether the unit is or can be reworked for twelve
volt input.

Sometimes simply renaming things works quite well.

Pen plotter motors would not sell at any price but laser lightshow
galvos flew on out of here.

To convert a pen plotter motor to a laser lightshow galvo, you remove
anything extra that is bent or broke.
