Was this right or was I seeing things?

As I couldn't see easily I turned it 'down' (fully anticlockwise)

It might be worth rechecking the direction - The last couple of
immersion heater thermostats I've had anything to do with work
'backwards' ie the temperature goes down with clockwise rotation.
