Default What are extra dots on sides of picture tubes for?

What are the extra pixels on the border (sides) of the picture tubes on
color TVs for (alignment?). The Sony TVs don't have these (because of the
Trinitron one-gun tube?)

Thanks,
Keith

Probably just extra phosphor material. The Trinitron tube has the phosphors
applied in a different way, vertical stripes rather than a matrix of
separate cells. The "one-gun" thing is just marketing hype, a Trinitron has
3 guns just like any other color TV tube.
