The intention was to paint everything at once since the door
was likely to get scuffed during construction....

Huh, putting up the door 1st does nothing to address these concerns!
And putting up the door last does not preclude "paint[ing] everything
at once". No, no, don't try to rationalize it. No matter how you try
to approach it, sheetrocking the door in was NOT required in order to
"paint everything at once". A small DIY blunder that's all. Luckily
not the worst thing in the world.
