will get someone else in to sort the problem.

Sorry, I'm having a bad week\month etc...

My advice would be call an electrician. By the sounds of it neither
you or Martin have any\much electrical knowledge and we could just

end
up making things worse.
A reasonable one man band type electrician shouldn't charge a fortune
to have a quick look at what you've got and tell you if it's correct
or not. Probably better than guessing what your mate has done.

update:

i call electrician and he tells me that martin should not have wired
the shower into the 15 amp plug like he did and that cable was too
thin.

he has rewired it into the fusebox and everything works ok (although
he says the house needs rewiring sometime next year as the sockets are
obsolete(?))

not happy as it cost me £180 on top of the money i gave to martin to
install the shower but there you goes.

thanks for the advise everyone.
