Surely you use Google to research things like holidays etc.

Yup, if you are researching something then you are likely to be browsing
many new sites. Hence some of the cautions I mentioned regarding
software setup.

You can probably save the greatest level of paranoia for when browsing
certain categories of sites (i.e. porn, warez, other less mainstream
activities shall we say).

And obviously never follow links from spam.
