3.what's the longest-lasting and
nicest coating to use? (I know they come in all shades these days, but
I'll
probably keep to real wood colours.)


I use Cuprinol Wood Care - it seems very good, keeps it colour much longer
than Creosote (or Creocote as they now sell)
But it ain't cheap.

Personally all the water based ones I have seen fade very quickly.
