Obviously without any additional information on the size of the room,
window/door layout, we can't give much help, but there is are many 'closet
organizing systems' available to help make the most of limited space.
Some ideas:
- wall in a corner or end of the room to make a new closet, or enlarge an
existing one.
- use a 'pocket door' or sliding doors to help keep door swing from being an
issue
- buy a 'wardrobe' (piece of furniture) to use rather than an actual closet.
- if the Cape has 'kneewalls' check the avvailable free space behind them,
look for a dormer or other unused space that the builder might have felt was
too small to use so he just walled it off.
-raise the roof to make more room.
good luck.

Buying an old cape -- only drawback is a lack of closet room. Would
welcome
suggestions -- especially how to add additional closet space in the
existing
upstairs bedrooms. Thank you.
