The problem with your JVC vcr has nothing to do with the drum unit,
accepting the tape and shutting down is about 95% mode switch
problems, or
voltage regulator STK etc.......... clean the mode switch, or have
someone
clean it for you.

I tried to measure the voltage supply, see if it is weak. But it is hard
to disassemble the thing and find a good measuring point on the board. I
measured it over a resistor that becomes fairly hot. During tape inlay
the voltage went up a few volts from (what was it again) 6 to 8 V.
Nothing unexpected I think.
