Assuming they're NiCads, anything nearly the right size will work ok -
assuming the correct voltage (number of cells). I'd also guess that using
NIMh in this application as a direct replacement will also be fine, given
that NiCads are getting harder to find.

NiMH tends to do rather poorer if it's float charged constantly.
NiCd tends to last several years longer.
