The important thing about debt is not its absolute amount, but the ratio
of debt to assets. The feral government is overwhelmingly the largest
landowner in the US. The entire US federal debt could be repaid if the
government would sell some of its vast real estate holdings. That would
benefit local governments too, since they could then collect property
taxes on all that land. Turning that land to productive use would also
grow the economy, and hence increase the amount of taxes collected
by the government.
