Default Playstation 2 repair

If you screwed with the adjustments, it is time to replace the laser
assembly.
Then you can start troubleshooting what might have been the actual failure,
using proper troubleshooting methods and the service manual.

Hi,

I'm trying to repair a PS2 console which is not reading either CDs or
DVD discs. So far, I've tried adjusting the laser height/angle and
I've also adjusted the pots on the laser eye itself. Sometimes the
disc will spin when inserted, sometimes not; but it won't read any
discs.

The unit will click when I insert discs as it tries to read them. I
am not familiar with class 1 lasers; I don't know whether they are
supposed to emit a visible beam or not, but if I close the tray with
no disc inside, I see nothing emitted from the laser.

Is it time to change the laser assembly in this unit?

Thanks,
Fritz
