Default Cheap source for Machine oil for SB lathe

J & J wrote in message ...
I got an old South Bend Lathe, and I know that there are all kinds of
oils that they call for to lubricate it. Does anybody have a cheap
source for machine oil? I don't need much...

(1) Mineral oil from the drug store. About the purest oil available,
though maybe a bit heavy for spindle bearings but I used it for
several years in my 1942 vintage SB Model C without problems.

(2) Hydraulic jack oil, available at most auto parts stores by the
quart. Seems to be about 20 weight. I am using this now in the SB and
also in electric motors with sleeve bearings. For way oil I have been
using a homemade mix of 1 oz. STP to 10 oz. gear oil and it seems to
work ok, though I have not compared it side-by-side with commercial
way oil.
