The advantage of using skirting is that it doesn't crack when attacked by
vacuum cleaner.
I have fitted plain wood as skirting, no moulded top just rectangular
section planed timber.
Painted with acrylic gloss it looks fine.
Depends on the style you are trying to create I guess.
