Look in some places OTHER than Home Depot. You have their price as a
lower limit. You have the custom guy's price as an upper limit. Try
some other kitchen suppliers. You can get "standard" cherry cabinets
in a variety of sizes, styles and features. You do not have to go
"custom". Look at some standard ones and see if they would satisfy
you.

I would not allow any particle board shelves inside a custom cherry
cabinet. They don't have to be cherry but at least let them be
furniture grade plywood. If they are indeed "custom" you can have
what you want, not particle board with a question mark.
