It;'s not unheard of for a Noble laureate in later years to go off the rails.
The scientist who developed the process to replicate DNA, the process
that allows forensic investigators to take a tiny piece of hair or drop of
blood and replicate the DNA into the larger quantities needed for testing,
went off the rails with AIDS. He insisted that HIV was not the cause,
even as massive evidence showed that it was. He just kept digging himself
in deeper and deeper into a fool's hole.
AFAIK, he never admitted he was
wrong. And he is a Nobel laureate too.
