Default Home Inspection Rates

You can get a free radon test kit, normally from your state department of
health, or if you want to pay the $20, you can get it from an independent
company.
As for the home inspection price, that sounds reasonable.
For the water analysis, what is included in the analysis? I work in an
environmental lab and we could run your sample, but for $230, that would not
get you much information. If they are telling you things such as pH,
alkalinity, hardness, you can generally get kits at your local pet store. If
they do metals, that could get a little higher, if they test for fecal
coliforms / other pathogens, that would be even more expensive. If they have
a whole host of things they are analyzing, then you may be getting a
bargain. Generally well water is pretty clean unless you live near
industrial areas. Just know what you are getting before you pay for it.

Hello,

We are in the process of buying a home and are at the home inspection
stage. I called quite a few companies in the Massachusetts area and
got various quotes from various companies.

One particular company that we are interested in(got a referral from a
friend) gave us the following estimate.

Basic home inspection(for a 10year old, 2200+ colonial 4/2.5/2garage):
275$
Radon Testing: 80$
Well water testing: (Qualitative and quantitative): 230$
(The house we are looking to buy has a private well).

What do you folks here at misc.consumers think about these rates? Are
they too high? Is there something else I should be looking at?

Thanks a lot in advance.
