I wasn't optics, it was pure politics. trump did not want his plan to
overcome the election to be stopped. They finally sent the guard in when
it was apparent that Pence and Palosi had survived the attack, and the
plan had clearly failed. They wanted the house to decide who had won,
and they failed.

Perhaps the best part was when during Trump's trial, Collins and Murkowski asked
team Trump to explain when Trump first learned about the attack and what he
did in the hours that followed and to be as specific as possible. Trump's attorney
got up and said that is was the House's job to have figured that out as part of the
impeachment, so we don't know. That was a classic. It's totally obvious that
Trump's defense team knows what Trump did or didn't do that day and that it
would be devastating if it came out. If they had a record that was favorable,
they would have answered the question.
