independence, that Britain and the rest of the Empire immediately made
trade difficult for the new nations.

Correct. Trade with ex-empire, Commonwealth countries collapsed when we
joined the Common Market/EEC/EC/EU and were stuck with protectionist
tariffs and quotas.
