You are still free to call it what you want. The term China virus was
started by a very high government official and was intended to be a
derogatory remark. Since that government official no longer has a job
the rest of the people will now use the proper and accurate name for the
virus.

Very nearly. I bet most laypeople call it coronvirus or covid-19 rather than
SARS-CoV-2.
