Only the second-worst? Well, I'm sure we can do better if we try.
We won't rest until this is the worst pandemic.

They conveniently omit that the population of the US in 1957 was
177,751,476, not 329,227,746 when about 70,000 to 116,000 people died.
The CDC is notoriously bad with numbers. There was the Eisenhower
recession but that was more the steam running out of the pent up
spending post war than health issues.

similarly the 1968 population was 205,805,755 when the CDC estimates
there were 100,000 deaths, mostly among the older population from the
Hong Kong flu. There was a very mild recession as the government tried
to check the out of control spending on a futile Asian war.

I lived through both. I showed up for 6th grade every day in 1957. I
don't recall any masks or lockdowns. Ditto 1968 when I was teaching
school and would have welcomed a complete shutdown. Then there was that
famous superspreader event in '69 and a mass demonstation or two...

I would have to prowl archival records to see if the MSM were promoting
gloom and doom.
