I've found a couple of tutorials on compression for spoken word audio which
have given me some starting points. I'm getting quite a decent sound with
these settings in Audacity:

Threshold -60 dB
Noise floor -40 dB
Ratio 3:1
Attack time 0.01 secs
Release time 1 sec

I'll keep experimenting.
