It should not make any difference in terms of performance, so its
normally a case of whichever works best to

2. If this doesn't fix the leak was thinking if putting some
LS-X around top and bottom of the o ring. I believe this doesn't
"set" so would enable me to take the chamber back out at another
time.

LS-X is a clear silicone type sealant - so it does set. However it
remains softer than some and can be easier to remove.

Is this correct / is this a good idea? 3. I have tried looking
for O rings to replace them but they seem to have a variety of
diameter and thicknesses - although I can't find somewhere who
specify what they are to compare. Is this critical or is there
usually enough flex / stretch to not make this an issue?

It helps to get the right one. It might be worth looking at the spares
places for an exploded parts diagram. Once you have a part number it
gets easier to find a replacement.

Anyone have any other cunning ideas?

As a temporary fix on mine, I found winding several turns of PTFE on the
end of the pipe to expand its girth a little before fitting the O ring
worked well enough until the replacement came (I had to order the one I
needed from Germany)
