I'm trying to work out why changing ISP affects landline call
packages. Unless on a Virgin or possibly an LLU line.


Most packages these days are broadband and landline combined.
You can still take BB and landline separately, but those are becoming
increasingly relegated to a hidden corner of the provider's website.

To the OP: it might be worth considering VOIP.
Cheap calls, and no need for 'subscriptions' or 'packages'.
For example, if you don't call a lot 1p/min could work out cheaper than 10
pounds a month for 'unlimited' calls.
