The straight runs are easiest to remove, the most common and the most
saleable. Removal is just a matter of dropping the seat off the rail,
releasing/ dismantling the rail. Not difficult.

No, it's not straight. It turns through a right-angle at the bottom -
and another one at the top, round onto the landing. I guess that it's
been custom made to fit this particular staircase.
