I doubt there are teeth missing as the self test on power up includes fully rotating the camera in the horizontal plane and it does work as program for a while after this.
I'll probably have to bite the bullet and strip it down for investigation. It might be that a clean and lubricate plus check of slip rings and bushes could solve the problem.
