I painted a tile ceiling a few years ago. The good news is that it looked
brand new. The bad news is that is was slow and tedious because I had to

a brush to work the paint into all the nooks and crannies of the tile. My
neck is getting stiff thinking about the DAYS it took to paint it.

In my opinion:

a) priming the walls would be over kill. Washing them down with tsp would
be fine.


I really have to give my two cents here. I bought a condo where the
previous tenant smoked heavily. Probably more than heavily. We washed with
TSP very very well and painted with a light colored satin DutchBoy product.
Well, smoke-colored goo actually oooooozed from the walls (towards the top
of the wall only) when the conditions were humid enough (taking long
showers, cooking pasta, etc.) After each shower I took, the bathroom reeked
of cigs. We had to do it over and we primed it with Killz. The odor and goo
never returned.

I vote for a satin, too. A red semi-gloss plaster wall could be horrendous
in the wrong light and will cast a red color on people and furnishings in
the room. I made that mistake in a bathroom once only with orange. Ew.

b) semi gloss would show off every single imperfection of plaster. I have
plaster walls and use satin and if there is a sheen, I haven't seen it,
but
it is not dry and chalky like flat paint and much easier to clean.

OK. I was planning on priming all the walls with Killz/Olympia primer
and then going over them with a darker semi-gloss. That's all fine
and dandy, except the ceiling in the master bedroom is tiled, and
kinda dingy.. How do I paint a tiled ceiling.. I suppose just use a
paintbrush.. unless it'll result in looking crappy.

My other related issue: The walls in this home are plaster.. Will
semi-gloss show all the imperfections in the walls? I don't want to
use flat paint.. is there a compromise? dining is going to be soft
red hue, living room sage green.

Any advice is much appreciated!
