You are going to need filler somewhere along the line, so having screw
holes to fill does not seem to be much of an issue (so long as you have
some proper drywall screws). Saves waiting about for glue to dry.

Also wont there be screws holding the new plasterboard section to
the "backings"/supports anyway?

If its being skimmed (and the screws are the correct black
phosphate? plasterboard ones) what's a few more screw heads to
cover?
