The sulphate reacts with the overlying concrete screed, causing the
latter to expand, bulge and crack. A problem common in coal mining
areas, apparently. Although why it's called 'red ash' isn't explained.

right saw that kind of thing happen to a new warehouse floor at glasgow
airport in the early nighties...thanks
