Yes all EU citizens or visitors with visas to visit the EU could
travel there and cross to the UK, but that's fine, as they'll not
have the paperwork to get a job here, rent accommodation, etc. and
who cares about EU citizens who visit and leave?

What paperwork do you need to rent in the UK?

a passport

Really?

What paperwork do you need
for casual work?

Oddly, I've done both of those in the past and never once asked for my
passport.

how far in the past?

the rule changes are recent

The last time that I rented was six years ago.Â* You didn't to need to
prove "right to reside" in the UK then, you do now

The last time that I looked for a new job placement was three years ago.
IIRC that was the first time that I was asked to prove my "right to work
in the UK" in a 40 year working life.Â* (Though I have previously had to
provide my passport as proof that "I" was "me" for ML laws.Â* I think
that was overkill on the part of the agent.)

That's right. Landlords and employers are required to make such checks
and can be heavily fined if they are found to have failed to do so.

Banks are also now not only checking as an account is opened, but
checking through all existing accounts.
