I don't begrudge you for stealing the holiday; at least it kept a lot of
the traditions alive. Most Christians did phase out the naked fire
jumping part though...

I've been watching a video series on Amazon Prime called "Holy ****". It's a dissection of The Bible and it discusses the adoption of Pagan rituals by the early Christians and how they incorporated them into the Christian religion. It's quite funny. ^_^

Russell's 'The Germanization of Early Medieval Christianity' goes into
depth.

Toward the end of the book he addresses modern missionary work in places
like Africa. Convert them to Christianity but don't delve too deeply
into what little additions and substitutions they make to orthodox
doctrine.

The 'Heliand' is another interesting work. If you want to sell
Christianity to Saxons, Jesus better be the leader of a group of
warriors. Even the nativity story has the men out taking care of the
horses, not a bunch of worthless sheep.

Ronald Murphy S.J. has written a couple of books on the Heliand and also
wrote 'Tree of Salvation: Yggdrasil and the Cross in the North'. The
latter shows how Heathen symbolism was blended into monuments,
decorative art, and even the architecture of the stave churches.

The religion has come a long, long way from being a Jewish sect in the
middle east. Don't dig too deeply or you might find Wotan. Forthat
matter you can find him every week on Wotan's Day. That comes right
after Tyr's Day and right before Thor's Day. Today is Freyja's Day.
