Good question. I'm just guessing that the guy tried to do one of
their flaming oil quenches in a big barrel that wasn't too steady and
he knocked it over and spread flaming oil all over the place. Again,
just a guess, but how else could you start a fire that big
accidentally and come out alive?


The area that burned are primarily OLD wooden buildings. No fire stops
or and real close together.

42.770767, -73.700314 will drop you on the area.


The brick facades and the outer shells didn't help as they held the heat
in. Many of the buildings that suffered damage look OK on the face, but
the rear of them are burnt because of the dry old wood.
For the most part they burned so fast they couldn't get ahead of the
flames.
