what with all the problems the big rubber dounut gives? ......

Never had any problems with them... add some silicone grease or sealant
to
the faces before assembly, and then make sure the bolts that fix the
cistern to the pan are well tightened (its well worth buying the special
tool IME).

never understood why there are so many different types of

luck which one does the job ...

The one that comes with the set has always worked for me...

I was really thinking about replacement when it fails as it will .......

Don't know - never had one fail.

The only time they need replacing IME is when you need to separate a pan
and cistern that has already been installed for some time - then the
existing one will be shaped to fit the gap exactly and quite possibly
bonded to one or more of the surfaces.
