Also pluses and buses have only one, which has never looked correct

Because you're adding the "mis" to the actual word. Thus, spell is it's
own word and the prefix "mis" connects to the word "spell" which starts
with the "s" creating the two esses together. Still no difference than
your examples of "mis"type, "mis"read, etc.
