Many cities and towns offer green dumps for free. They take in logs,
trimmings, branches, anything natural. They also give away the stuff to
anyone who has need of it (except for firewood)

You may also visit a tree trimming company. They end up with tons of
wood and materials thry can't use.

I've found cherry, walnut, peach, oak etc. In central texas, you should
be able to find many small logs of live oak this way.

Kinda have to have a way to resaw large logs, or a bandsaw and limit your
finds to what the bandsaw can cut.
