Well... don't give up. For a while I taught some woodworking classes (wood turning)when I had more time. I was really surprised at how many guys came back to wood working later on in their lives, and they ALL told me they started their interest in wood by doing wood working projects with their fathers.

That seed you planted might just need a little more time.
