Though I don't have the skills Gilpin has, there has been times when I think, similarly, when I run across pieces of different woods. If there's a chance to do something with a unique find, I salvage it. I use to look for driftwood pieces, along the Miss. River, at the Morganza locks and in other places, like Chicot State Park. Weathered, gnarled (rootball?) pieces and other odd shapes & profiles are often found, almost anywhere.
That was a neat video. Thanks.
