If that doctor was all that important, he should have scheduled a flight

So passengers should waste their time because United Airlines doesn't
plan ahead?

United Airlines can't foresee the future. Things happen, ranging from
eqpt problems, to weather, to a flight crew that doesn't make it to
where they are needed. The latter is what happened in this case,
creating the need for those 4 United employees to go to KY. If you
have some critical job, absolutely have to be somewhere, it's really
stupid to rely on the last flight out of the day.

You are completely unaware of his issues and why he may have taken the
last flight. Regardless, it's irrelevant. The flight problems you list
are rarer than the airline overbooking. Why is it acceptable for them to
play the odds but not the passengers?

because that is what the contract says. And he agreed to its terms.
